Shinkansen bullet train tips
Train travel in Japan is elite, affordable and actually easy. Trains are on time, clean quiet and really enjoyable.
The bullet train (Shinkansen) is the most easiest and efficient way of getting across country ion Japan - Tokyo - Kyoto - Osaka / Osaka - Kyoto - Tokyo.
It’s a true experience that you’re best booking in advance using booking apps Klook. or Smart Ex you can of course buy tickets and the stations also. I recommend booking the green car/first class, for little extra it's worth it - You will receive and complimentary disposable hand towel and your rubbish is collected.
Don’t forget to grab a bento box or egg sand and a drink at the station for your trip (it’s fine to eat on the train).
Book a seat with a view of Mount Fuji (from tokyo to Kyoto / Osaka etc sit on the Right hand side, from Kyoto to Tokyo sit on the Left hand side. You can also books seats with luggage space too. Shinkansen (bullet train) types are categorized by speed and stop frequency rather than just design. On the main Tokaido-Sanyo line, Nozomi is the fastest, Hikari is a mid-range service, and Kodama stops at all stations.
Tips
Arrive early to the station, and pay attention to the signs, if you have booked online you will receive a digital ticket otherwise if you have a physical ticket (actually two) to insert into the turnstile. Once you get to your track, note your car number and wait at the corresponding gate number as the train only stops briefly.
Next don’t be loud on the train, this means no loud talking, put your phone on silent and make/take calls from in between the carriages. There are bathrooms on board.
Put Mount Fuji into your maps on your phone, as you don’t want to miss it, fingers crossed it a clear view day!
Relax enjoy your trip!
